Doan expecting to resign with Phoenix in the next week
It seems that Shane Doan will officially be signing a contract to remain in Phoenix. The deal will be completed once/only if the papers are signed by Greg Jamison to buy the team and keep the organization in Arizona.
While on air Thursday afternoon with Phoenix radio station XTRA 910, Doan finally broke the silence and said that he “expects” to sign a contract within the next week. That is however, if the sale goes through.
“We have a deal worked out, that we just want to make sure the team gets signed, and everything gets done, and it gets done before the 15th (of September),” Doan said.
“I’m hoping that (the sale) gets done here this week. I don’t think I’d need too many days to get it signed after it’s done.”
Although it is not yet known what the length of the deal will be, many expect that it will be the last contract of the 35-year old’s playing career.
“I want everything to be done and over with,” the Halkirk, AB native said. “I want the team to be sold. I want Mr. Jamison to be the owner, and I want us to be excited about the upcoming year. That’s kind of what it’s been the whole time.”
Terry Bross, Doan’s agent, confirmed to TheFourthPeriod that a deal has not yet been signed.
If for whatever reason the sale falls apart, Doan did say that he will consider 2 or 3 other teams to sign with, though there couldn’t be a slimmer chance of that happening at this point.
While talking about the other interested teams, Doan said they have been ”phenomenally patient and kind and generous with some of their offers and different things.”
“The Coyotes have been more than fair to me in their offer as well,” he said. “Obviously to pick up your family and move would be difficult. And I’ve stated to anyone that has ever listened this whole time, my goal is to stay in Phoenix. And until I believe that the team is in that much trouble, then I was going to do everything I could to make it so that I had a chance to stay here.”
As far as when Doan will sign by…
“I will be signed by midnight on the 15th. “I’ll sign somewhere… My goal is to sign here.”
Doan scored 22 goals and added 28 assists for 50 points in 79 games this past season. Drafted 7th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the 1995 NHL Draft, Doan has tallied a total of 788 points (318 goals, 470 assists) in 1,198 career games.
He will turn 36 on the 10th of October.
