Anton Volchenkov breaks ankle
Anton Volchenkov will be away from action for a bit after breaking his ankle while playing for Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod of the Kontinental Hockey League. New Jersey Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello confirmed to The (Bergen) Record’s very own, Tom Gulitti, that the 30-year old veteran defenseman is expected to miss the next 4-6 weeks.
Jay Grossman, Anton’s agent, said Volchenkov did not tell him how the injury occurred.
“The one thing you know about Anton is he only knows one way to play and it’s the right way,” Grossman said. “But I don’t think it’s anything major. Hopefully, it’s not much more than a hiccup for him.”
Volchenkov has yet to collect a single point in his first 3 games this season while playing for Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod and sits with a -2 rating.
If the National Hockey League and National Hockey League’s Player Association were to resolve the labor dispute sometime during the course of Volchenkov’s recovery schedule, the Devils would be able to suspend him without pay until he is healthy enough to return to action.
In 557 career NHL games, Volchenkov has collected 18 goals and 95 assists for a total of 113 career points. He is a +67 thus far in his career and has received a total of 367 penalty minutes throughout his 9 NHL seasons.
