Joe Sakic is not the only one former Avalanche player to be inducted into a hall of fame this year. Peter Forsberg, along with four other players, will go into the IIHF’s Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place in Stockholm, Sweden in May at the World Hockey Championships.

It did not take long for Forsberg to make a name for himself on the international stage for Sweden. He set an all-time record for most points in a World Junior tournament, getting 31 points in seven games in 1993. He also set the tournament record against Japan with 10 points in a single game. In total, he netted 42 points in 14 games over two years.

His most famous international moment came in the gold medal match at the 1994 Winter Olympics against Canada. His “one-hand, slide-in” goal on Corey Hirsch secured the the gold medal and was placed on a Swedish postage stamp. He was also part of the 2006 Olympic gold medal team.

He came up big for Sweden twice in World Championships, leading Tre Kronor to gold medals in 1992 and 1998. He was the leading scorer in 1998 with 11 points as Sweden went unbeaten in nine games.

In total, Forsberg earned four gold medals, five silvers and one bronze.
