Top 10 Red Wings Rivals: #8 Vancouver Canucks
(EDITOR’S NOTE: This is part 3 of 10 in a series on rivalries. Red Wings 101 will count down the top ten current rivals of the Detroit Red Wings. Fans are encouraged to comment with memories from past games that they may have seen in the past.)
This next team has become a fairly new rival to the Red Wings. Checking in at Number 8: Vancouver Canucks. The Canucks-Red Wings rivalry is relatively new. Yet, the Canucks haven’t won a Stanley Cup in franchise history and have only faced the Red Wings once in the playoffs (2002 Conference Quarterfinals, the Red Wings went on to win the series).
The regular season matchups between the teams in the last few years have become must-see television. In the last 12 meetings, seven have been decided by one goal, and six of those meetings went to overtime or a shootout. Both teams have also been in the thick of the President’s trophy race the last two seasons.
Should both teams meet in the playoffs, the series would definitely be close.
DEFINING MOMENT: On March 20, 2010 at the Rogers Centre in Vancouver, both the Red Wings and the Canucks played a hard fought game that went to overtime. As time was running out, Henrik Zetterberg fired a wristshot past Canucks Roberto Luongo to win the game with only three-tenths of a second left in overtime.
Honorable mention goes to Canucks forward and Livonia, Michigan native Ryan Kesler getting “Kronwalled.”
