AHL: Marlies’ Rynnas too much for Griffins to handle
The Grand Rapids Griffins finally managed to get a goal on Toronto Marlies netminder Jussi Rynnas after he shut them out the last time he faced them.
Alas, that goal was the only one the Griffins would get past Rynnas as they would come out on the short end of a 3-1 decision.
The Griffins’ only goal came 52 seconds into the first period when Tomas Tatar dished the puck to Gustav Nyquist at the Toronto blue line. Nyquist then fired a shot past Rynnas for his tenth goal of the year.
The score would remain 1-0 until 4:13 in the second. Tom McCollum left his net for what he thought was a penalty on the Marlies, and Tatar in posession. But the penalty was called on Triston Grant, and when the Marlies gained possession, Carter Ashton fired into a wide open net.
Ryan Hamilton would score the go-ahead goal 44 seconds in to the third period courtesy of Ryan Hamilton. Hamilton would add an empty-netter with 29 seconds left to seal the win.
McCollum finished with 21 saves in the loss.
The Griffins will close out 2012 Monday night against Rockford in Grand Rapids. Puck drop is set for 6 pm.
