Jamie Benn Still Without A Contract
With the Dallas Stars ready to kick off their 2013 season tonight at 7:00 PM CT when they play host to the Phoenix Coyotes, they will be without forward, Jamie Benn, who is currently without a contract. The 23-year old center/winger is currently an RFA and has yet to agree to a contract with the team.
Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet reported Thursday afternoon that Joe Nieuwendyk, Dallas’ General Manager, had offered the 6′ 2″ 205lbs Canadian a contract that would have kept him a Star for the next 6 seasons, paying him a total of $33,000,000 over the course of the contract. As we have come to notice, Benn did not accept the offer that would have paid him an annual salary of $5,500,000 and appears to still only be interested in a short term deal, most likely in the 2-4 year range.
Recording 160 points in 222 games thus far in his young career, the 129th overall pick of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft has become one of the NHL’s top young players since entering the league in the 2009-10 season. Having registered career highs in goals (26), assists (37), points (63) as well as recording a new career high with a +/- rating of +15, it was a given that Benn would be making a fair amount of money on his next contract.
With both term and money supposedly issues in the negotiations between Benn and the organization, it is highly unlikely that we will see the All-Star in the Stars line-up in the coming days.
