Penguins Game Day (Game 11: Capitals)
After four straight victories over a week span of time, the Penguins look to extend their streak as they face off against the Washington Capitals tonight at the CONSOL Energy Center. Washington will look to move their wins total to 3 tonight, as they look to spoil the winning streak of the Penguins. The Penguins will look to distance themselves in the division after they grabbed the top seed earlier this week. Neuvirth appears to be getting the nod tonight against the Pen. Currently he holds a record of 1-4-1 this season with a 2.99GAA and has a .893SV%. It’s obvious the Capitals have been struggling this season scoring only 23 goals this season and allowing 36 goals against in 9 games played. Allowing 4 goals per game can kill you especially when you go up against a team like the Penguins who are averaging 3.5 goals a game.
It is still unsure who will get the start in net for Pittsburgh, but after a strong game against the Islanders on Tuesday we may see Fleury. Bylsma has stated they have yet to deter from the goalie rotation they have in place, which would technically make tonight Vokoun’s fifth start, but it wont be until after the morning skate that we will know for sure. Crosby appears to be fine after taking a puck to the face at Nassau Coliseum on Tuesday, so expect him to be ready to go against the Caps.
Game Time: 7:00pm est
Side note: Last night the Pittsburgh Penguins Traded Defensemen Ben Lovejoy to Anaheim for a 5th round pick in the 2014 Draft. “Good Luck Mr. Lovejoy.”
What to Watch for
Expect at any time for Ovechkin to turn it on and get back to his old self, the more he plays under Head Coach Adam Oats the more comfortable he will get.
Pittsburgh needs a lesson in discipline, Tuesday against the Isles they took 7 penalties, which was 7 too many.
Letang vs Green round 2, much like last game expect these two players to be huge difference makers for their respective teams.
Mike Ribeiro, This is the first season the Penguins are getting a good look at Ribeiro on a regular basis as he previously played on the Dallas Stars. Look for him to continue his play as he has been very consistent all season.
Orpik and Martin, Wow! If not for those two players Tuesday may have gone differently.
The Capitals are a team struggling to stay alive, their Captain Alex Ovechkin has been a disappointment from the get go, and their goaltending has been anything but stellar. If the Capitals can pull off a win tonight it would be a HUGE boost for the club, but the only way that will happen is from a complete collapse of the Hot Pittsburgh Team. Expect the Penguins to continue doing what they have been over the last four games, play simple mistake free hockey as best they can, getting their chances when the opponent makes their mistakes. Crosby and the Pens will continue their wins streak as they go in to Newark on Saturday looking to make it 6.
