NHL draft

The 2013 NHL draft has been one of the most anticipated drafts in recent history. With stars like Seth Jones, Nathan Mackinnon, Jonathan Drouin, Alexander Barkov, etc. One can only think which team will draft who. With that being said, the following mock draft predicts all of the first round picks.

1. Colorado Avalanche - Nathan MacKinnon, C

Excellent skill, speed, and talent. MacKinnon is one of the most complete players in this year’s draft. Needs to work slightly on his defensive game. Possesses a quick release and ability to slice through defenders and put it in the back of the net.

2. Florida Panthers - Seth Jones, D

The drafts best defensemen. Big, strong, and skilled, Seth Jones is the perfect pick here for Florida. He can step right in and help there blue line.

3. Tampa Bay Lightning - Jonathan Drouin, C

Wizard with the puck, already seen the highlight reel a few times. Majestic stickhandling ability and hard to knock of the puck. Dynamic offensive player that will be a excellent addition to the Lightning.

4. Nashville Predators - Valeri Nichushkin, C/RW

Talented player with great size and skill. 6,4 220-lb. power forward will be a great addition to the predators lineup in the future. Needs to work on his defensive game but has great size skill and skating ability.

5. Carolina Hurricanes - Alexander Barkov, C

Possesses a rare combination of size and outstanding technical skills. Tremendously skilled player and can handle physical play with his size and skill.

6. Calgary Flames - Elias Lindholm, C

The Flames will start their rebuild in the right direction with this pick. Lindholm is a extremely talented player who currently plays against men and has a massive contribution offensively. Reads the game well and strong at side stepping hits and reading plays.

7. Edmonton Oilers - Sean Monahan, C

Resembles similar qualities to Gabriel Landeskog. Not one of the most offensively talented players in this draft but has a great 2 way game. Great size for a Center could be NHL ready before some of his fellow draft picks.

8. Buffalo Sabres - Hunter Shinkaruk, C/LW

One of the purest snipers in this years draft class. A offensively gifted winger with skilled hands and great fore-checking ability.

9. New Jersey Devils -Darnell Nurse, D

Big, strong, talented blue-liner. Huge presence on the blue-line and is hard to play against. Easily projects as a top 2 future blue-liner.

10. Dallas Stars - Bo Horvat, C

A Big scorer also highly regarded for two-way game; One of the best in this years draft on face-offs. His all around game appeals to many scout. Was outstanding in the Memorial cup for the London Knights. Has high potential and will be to hard to pass up if he slips to 10.

11. Philadelphia Flyers - Rasmus Ristolainen, D

A Big, strong, skilled and nasty defensemen; already 6-4 and 207 pounds, with room to grow and develop. Him and luke Schenn would be a deadly force on the backend. Has high potential, very good defensively.

12. Phoenix Coyotes - Nikita Zadorov, D

Big Russian would be outstanding addition to the coyotes blue line. 6,5 defensemen who knows how to use his size well. Has high potential and can protect your high skilled players. Not afraid to through his body around, will be a good addition to the Yotes back-end.

13. Winnipeg Jets - Anthony Mantha, RW

Good size and already possess an NHL-caliber shot; showed toughness in battling through a few serious injuries and coming back stronger then ever. One of the best skating, if not the best skating defensemen in this years draft. The Blue Jackets do not have the strongest defensive core, and Ryan Pulock can develop into a future top 4 d man with high potential. To hard to pass up here for the Blue Jackets.

14. Columbus Blue Jackets - Ryan Pulock, D

15. New York Islanders - Max Domi, C

His through-the-legs sauce was just a glimpse of what Max Domi is capable off. One of the highest offensive potentials in this years draft, he would be to hard to pass up for the New York Islanders. A Domi, Tavares, Strome line in the future would be deadly.

16. Buffalo Sabres (From MIN) - Frederik Gauthier, C

The Buffalo Sabres with their second pick take the giant centreman Gauthier. He’s got some interesting upside and he could also become a looming presence in the bottom six if he doesn’t have top six talent. He knows how to lay the body, get in the dirty areas and make plays happen. One of the biggest forward’s in this years draft.

17. Ottawa Senators - Ryan Hartman, RW

Ranked as a A level skater by the NHL scouting central, ryan hartman has had a standout season. With great skating ability, size and ability to score, hartman will be a good pick here for the Ottawa senators, and can end up being a potential top 6 forward in the future with the right development.

18. Detroit Red Wings - Robert Hagg, D

Last minute addition to the Sweden roster, ended up becoming one of the best defensemen. Q-backs PP & is on ice in all critical situations. Shoots puck extremely well & is very good skater. Will be a good addition to the Red Wings blue-line in the future.

19. Columbus Blue Jackets (From NYR) - Josh Morissey, D

Does not have huge size, but knows how to use his size well. Has a absolute laser beam of a shot, and is comparable to Ryan Pulock in skating ability. Has potential to be a top 4 Defensemen if developed right. Taking a good forward prospect earlier in the draft, the Blue Jackets can now take a defensemen with this pick. Morissey or Mirco Mueller seem to be the likely candidates.

20. San Jose Sharks - Zachary Fucale, G

Zachary Fucale is the number 1 rated goalie prospect in this years draft. The San Jose Sharks have not drafted a goalie since 2008. He is calm in his net and has great positioning. Great poise and maturity but needs to work on his rebound control. Has all the tools to be a future number 1 goalie.

21. Toronto Maple Leafs - Kerby Rychel, LW

Great pick here for Toronto. Big power forward winger who can score. Brian Burke type player, but has great sniping skills and will be too hard to pass up for the leafs. Can develop into a future top 6 player. Possesses a great shot with above average puck skills, and has a big one timer. Will be a perfect pick for the Leafs here.

22. Calgary Flames (From STL) - Ian McCoshen, D

Great 2 way blue liner. Brings size, grit, strength and skill in a 6-2, 207 lbs frame. Had a career high in assists and goals this season. Has good potential to become a top 4 NHL defenseman in the future.

23. Washington Capitals - Alexander Wennberg, C

Alexander Wennberg is a big strong center who has a physical edge to his game. His development has seen big strides this season, and the big swede has not looked out-of-place for an 18-year-old. One scout said “he is very hard to knock off the puck.” After trading Filip Forsberg in exchange for Martin Erat, Wennberg will help replace Forsberg and can end up being a solid pick for the Capitals come draft day.

24. Vancouver Canucks - Zack Nastasiuk, RW

Improved throughout the season and has taken great strides in his offensive game. He can be relied on defensively and on the penalty-kill. He is a fearless player who plays a team game.

25. Montreal Canadiens  - Adam Erne, LW

He is one of the better 2 way forwards in this years draft. Can deliver the offensive punch and a contribute to a solid defensive game. Plays like a power forward and loves to get in the “dirty areas”. Will be a good addition to the 3rd line for Montreal in the future.

26. Anaheim Ducks - Samuel Morin, D

A 6,7 200 lbs blue line. Samuel Morin is a strong shot from the point and has the ability to play big minutes. He has not lived up to his size at time but with the right development he will be able to excel with his size. He is offensively limited but has good a good physical presence and hockey IQ. The Anaheim Ducks love those gritty players that can check. Samuel Morin is just that.

27. Columbus Blue Jackets - (From LAK) - Curtis Lazar, C

Curtis Lazar is versatile and skilled. He has shown he can excel in the big stage as he had 32 points in 40 games the last 2 playoffs in the WHL. He is a big talented forward with grit and would be a great fit at 27.  He would fit well in Columbus and could be a great fit on the 3rd line in the future.

28. Calgary Flames (From PIT) - Eric Comrie, G

Eric Comrie could be the long-term Successor to Mikka Kippersuf. He has almost healed from hip injury. He is the 2nd rated goalie prospect in this years NHL Entry draft behind Zachary Fucale. He has decent size and good technique as a hybrid goalie. He has high potential and i could see the Flames drafting him to replace Kippersuf in the future.

29. Dallas Stars (From BOS) - Jacob De La Rose, LW

The Dallas Stars need a strong 2-way player that is good on and off the puck. Jacob De La Rose is that player. With great ability to battle for pucks and score Jacob is also a strong skater. He is a strong and physical player that can make an impact on any line. He knows how to play a complete game and would be a great 3rd line player in the future. He will be a good addition to the stars as he brings Physical play and a solid 2 way game.

30. Chicago Blackhawks - J.T Compher, C

Known for his Puck possession skills and the ability to wait out defenders and let them make the first move. Although he might not evolve into a top 6 player in the future, he’s the type of guy that can be great on a checking role. He knows how to force the play into the offensive zone and play a skilled game. The Blackhawks play a fast and skill game and Compher will contribute to that in the future.
