Penguins Offseason Update 6/19/2013
Updates on Dupuis, Letang as well as news around the NHL.
It seems as I sit here and type this, the negotiations with Pascal Dupuis are going fine. I still believe he will be making around $3-$3.5 million a year if he stays with the Penguins and I would be shocked if it is any more than 3 years.
Negotiations with Letang and his agent are apparently due to start today, but some are speculating that Shero may just inform Letang and his agent that he will be traded. Today all 30 General Managers are conveining in Boston for a round of meetings. Due to this Shero may soon be fielding questions on who is available and what he may want in return. Is Letang on the block, or will Shero just test the waters to see what he is worth? Kris will easily demand $7+ million a year and has reportedly stated he wants a No Trade Clause (NTC). That is something Pittsburgh can not do.
They need to find a way to keep Kris, he is a rare talent, and though he has yet to excel as a Power Play quarterback I feel his upside far out weighs his downside. In return the Penguins would NEED to get a top four defender to replace Letang’s minutes. I don’t think anyone wants to see Niskanen or young defenseman Simon Despres needing to carry the burden of playing 25 minutes a game. With the belief that Letang wants to eventually take his career to Montreal, could a Subban for Letang swap be in the cards?
Around the League
The Philadelphia Flyers have informed Daniel Brier that he will be bought out this summer. That will easily make him one of the hottest Free Agents this year.
Even though news had come out that the Flyers do not intend to buy out Bryzgalov, I don’t believe that is the full story. Holmgren is saying he never stated that to Ilya or his agent, but that as of the time of their conversation they had not decided to buy him out. I think this comes down to what happens with the Bernier sweepstakes currently going on with L.A. It seems that Philly has been very much in the loop for Bernier’s services.
It appears that Philadelphia and Anaheim may be close on a deal that would see Bobby Ryan headed to the City of Brotherly Love.
The Flyers have signed Mark Streit, formally the Captain of the New York Islanders to a 4 year deal at $5,250,000 a year.
Joe Sakic stated that the Avalanche do not intend to select Seth Jones (Highly Touted Defenseman) with the first overall pick. They are more interested in selecting a forward. Alexander Barkov, Jonathan Drouin and Nathan MacKinnon are three forwards highly ranked that Colorado may select from.
New Jersey Devils
It seems that the financial issues that played a part in the departure of Star Forward Zach Parise may be the same reason the Devils will be unable to hang on to David Clarkson. On top of that the organization is struggling to make its loan payments. It may be time for the league to step in and take control of this club like they did with Phoenix
It seems that a contract extension for Head Coach Dave Tippet could be announced at any time this week.
Stanley Cup Final
Boston leads series 2 games to 1 over Chicago.
