Trade: BUF/NJ

buffalo sabres trade rumors

The Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils have completed a trade. Buffalo sends left-wing Riley Boychuk to New Jersey in exchange for defenseman Henrik Tallinder.

“We are excited to have Henrik back in the mix on our blue line. His experience will be invaluable not only in adding more stability to our back end, but also in the development of some of our younger defensemen.” – Sabres general manager Darcy Regier.

This will be Tallinder’s second stint with Buffalo as he played in parts of 8 seasons with the team who drafted him in the second round (#48 overall) of the 1997 NHL draft.

Tallinder, 34, previously played for the Sabres from the 2001-02 season to 2009-10 before signing a 4-year contract worth $13.5 million with New Jersey in the summer of 2010.

The Stockholm, Sweden native played in 25 games this past season, accumulating 1 goal and 3 assists for 4 points. He finished the season with 10 penalty minutes and an even rating.

In 468 career games with Buffalo prior to joining the Devils, the 6’4″ 215lbs defenseman had registered 20 goals and 88 assists for 108 points.

Boychuk, 22, played for Fort Worth Brahmas of the Central Hockey League in 2012-13, collecting 8 goals and 9 assists for 17 points along with 30 penalty minutes in 41 games.

He was Buffalo’s seventh round draft choice (#208 overall) in the 2010 NHL draft.

This deal was strictly a salary cap dump for New Jersey, who frees up $3.375 million in cap space with the trade and now have just above $7.1 million in cap space to fill 2 roster spots.

Buffalo, on the other hand, has just over $11.1 million in cap space remaining with 3 roster spots empty, according to CapGeek.

Both players are heading into the final year of their current contracts. Tallinder will be an unrestricted free-agent next summer whereas Boychuk will be a restricted free-agent should they not come to terms on extensions with their respective teams prior to July 1st, 2014.
