Eight years ago, life was good for the Edmonton Oilers. They looked primed and ready to hoist the franchise’s sixth Stanley Cup and first since 1990. It’s been nearly six months since the Bolts took the ice. After a whirlwind offseason that produced a bevy of new faces, it was finally game time. Last night was the home opener for the Tampa Bay Lightning. As soon as the puck hit the ice on the opening draw, the crowd of more than 19,000 erupted into a thunderous “Let’s go Lightning” chant. It seems like it’s going to be a new era for the Ottawa Senators with so many veteran players gone. Hopefully the new era comes with a Stanley Cup. First it was Dany Heatley who requested a trade back in 2009 because he wasn’t getting enough playing time under young coach Cory Clouston. He frustrated fans of both the Senators and the Edmonton Oilers when he wouldn’t simply waive his no trade clause. Instead he wanted to go to the San Jose Sharks, which cost the Senators $4.5 million to get rid of the no trade clause. (more…)
